My children are biracial their hair is a mix between white & african american hair types. So I am going to be sharing out hair care routine for toddlers with curly-mixed hair! They have beautiful soft curls, but they definitely take some maintenance. Their hair texture is a perfect mix between mine & his Dad’s. I do them both a little different since Kaiverly is only 6 months and Everson is two and way more active & has longer hair. They both sleep on satin crib sheets to prevent some of the tangles that come from sleeping on it. I have to always keep it moisturized and styled because if I don’t then their curls get crazy and get little knots at the ends. Since they take their bath in the evenings I end up doing it once after their bath and then again when they wake up.
So for Everson, I always rinse his hair when he gets a bath but I usually only wash it with shampoo or a co-wash every couple nights (unless he got extra sweaty & dirty that day). Everytime I wash it I always do a little conditioner on the back to maintain moisture. Then when he gets out I just lather in some As I Am leave in conditioner and comb it through.
Then when I am styling it in the morning I have to get it wet again to revamp his curls. I used an old bottle of Beach Bum Conditioning Detangler with a little bit left and filled the rest with water. I use that concoction to wet his hair. Then I comb out any little tangles. I do this very gently as I do not want to break any of his hair. Once it is all combed through and wet I use the As I Am Double Butter Cream and rub it through the back where his curls are to moisturize & bring out the curl more. And that is it! Unless were going to something special then I’ll go the extra step of spraying this Coconut Oil Mirco-Moisture Spray (I don’t have the link for this one because I just picked it up from T.J Maxx) to keep it shiny and smooth ( and because I love the smell of it!)
For Kaiverly, since she is younger I don’t do her hair as often, I just let it kind of do it’s thing. As she gets older I will adjust her hair care routine for her curls. I just wash her hair every couple nights with aveeno baby wash since she is so little and I don’t want to hurt her eyes (I also use breastmilk soap on her sometimes too if I have it made). When she gets out, I just add the same leave in conditioner as Evie and comb it through. When she gets up, I usually just leave it and pop on a bow her. Other times I will wet it with the water spray, brush it out and put a dab of the curl cream. Then she is done!
I have pictures for each step below from when I did Evie’s hair when he was little. I will link the products! They work amazing for them and it makes it so quick and easy. Definitely just make sure you have a good comb (wide tooth) and a soft bristle brush and a water spray bottle!
