The Pink Palace

This past week I shot a maternity session and we had planned to just do it at sunset on the beach. However, due to the weather there was no sun and it looked kind of gloomy. So last minute I decided to do a few in front of the Don Cesar Hotel in St.Pete Beach, Florida. It gave it the perfect pop of color yet vintagy old school film vibes. I love the way they turned out. I shot on my Sony aII with my 50 mm lens. I linked a great starter kit if you are just starting out and don’t know what to get started with.
Beachy Maternity Shots With a Pop Of Color
These bump shots gave such an old school film vibe but also like a tropical get-away feel to the photos. These were gorgeous and gave just enough color to this gloomy beach shoot. I love to find easy ways to find alternate backgrounds at shoots so that way the photos don’t get monotonous.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best color to wear to for maternity pictures?
The best colors for a maternity shoot would definitely be dependent upon two things: the season & the location. In the spring it would be so fun to have like a pastel colored dress or maybe even like a simple floral pattern. If you are somewhere cold during the fall the best color for you maternity dress would probably be a richer tone like an earthy orange, brown or mauve, maybe even a green. If you are doing your pictures on the beach during summer the best color for your dress is going to be a white, beige, cream/lace or any time of soft pastel color. However, if you are doing your maternity photos inside a studio or home session you could definitely get away with going with a really classic black or darker color.
What do I need for a maternity photoshoot?
The most important thing to bring to your maternity photoshoot is definitely your dresses. Depending on your time and location you may have bought two different dresses to change into so you can get a couple in each different look. The best options would be to bring one more fitting and classic and one more dreamy and open to the belly with either an opening or a sheen/lace look. Other than your outfit changes, you could bring any special moments that you would want to remember in your photoshoot. For example, you could bring your ultrasound picture to capture a few with your baby, you could bring a letter board (like this one) to reveal your baby’s name in your pictures or you could bring a baby blanket, shoes, or outfit that baby will eventually wear!
Is 37 weeks too late for maternity photos?
Typically it is recommended you want to wait until further in your pregnancy like between 36-37 weeks pregnant to schedule your maternity photoshoot. However, just to be safe in case baby decides to come early, anywhere between 33-37 weeks is the new suggestion. This new suggestions not only makes sure that you don’t miss your window if baby comes early, but it also allows you to be your most comfortable in the pictures. Sometimes those last few weeks of pregnancy can be uncomfortable on your body and you want to be feeling your best!
Are maternity photoshoots worth it?
A maternity photoshoot should be on every women’s to do list before baby arrives. Whether it is your first or your 5th baby each season of pregnancy is going to be uniquely beautiful. If you are on your first it can be a really special last document of yourself and your partner before becoming parents. If you have kids already each new life in your maternity pictures will be like a special beginning and end to each chapter that each child brings. You may not always feel your best during pregnancy but you will be amazed at how beautiful professional maternity photos will make you feel! Whether you believe it now or not you will miss these moments with your bump & they will be special to look back on with the little one in your belly one day!
